With Emilia, an innovative mobile app launched worldwide in August 2025, patients and healthcare facility users now benefit from a digital solution that automatically generates clear, structured notes summarizing the topics discussed during a medical consultation.

Among other things, Emilia's smart note-taking solution enables patients to better retain the information shared with them during their medical consultations, but also to communicate it more effectively to stakeholders in their care pathway, such as caregivers or other healthcare professionals.

While Emilia is a valuable ally for patients, it also strengthens the partnership and relationship between clinicians and patients by fostering a culture of collaboration between them.

In this article, surgeon Dr. Pascal St-Germain explains 4 ways in which an app like Emilia can benefit clinicians in their work.

1. Better Retention of Information and Recommendations Given by Healthcare Professionals

While the benefits of Emilia for patients are obvious, the app is also a valuable ally for healthcare professionals, particularly doctors.

“In practice, we know that patients can forget or mix up some of the information they receive. With a tool like Emilia, we believe they will leave with a clear and easy-to-follow message. As a result, better understanding will increase patient compliance with their care plan and thus the chances of success in improving their health.”, explains Dr. Pascal St-Germain.

Healthcare professionals are also likely to see a reduction in the number of phone calls to their clinic or office seeking clarification: the simplified summary of the medical consultation generated by Emilia reduces the need to repeat the same explanations.

2. More Effective Medical Follow-up

Better prepared and more informed patients mean more focused and effective exchanges during follow-up appointments. Emilia can help reduce the time spent repeating explanations that have already been given, allowing healthcare professionals to focus more on what matters most: clinical decision-making and personalized care.

“For example, a patient who arrives for a follow-up appointment after having had the opportunity to reread the summary of their last medical consultation will have fewer questions, which will make the meeting run more smoothly. This dynamic not only promotes the effectiveness of the appointment, but also the satisfaction of both parties.”, explains Dr. Pascal St-Germain.

3. More Accurate Communication Between Healthcare Professionals

In a comprehensive care pathway, patients often consult several healthcare professionals: doctors from different specialties, pharmacists, nurses, physical therapists, etc. Each stakeholder needs a clear understanding of the decisions made to ensure continuity of care.

Emilia facilitates this communication between healthcare professionals by producing clear summaries that contextualize medical choices.

For example, when a pharmacist receives a new prescription without understanding the reason for a change in medication, the notes generated by Emilia can help them understand the clinical context behind the decision.

“Too often, patients find themselves having to explain to another healthcare professional why a treatment has been changed. With Emilia, the information is simplified but remains faithful to the original message, reducing the risk of error or confusion.”, says Dr. St-Germain.

4. Reducing the Workload of Frontline Staff

Finally, in environments such as emergency rooms, intensive care units, or even during hospitalization, patients are often cared for by several different caregivers in succession. During this time, loved ones naturally seek information about the patient's condition, which can generate numerous avoidable calls. The nurse in charge is therefore called upon to provide details that she does not necessarily have at her fingertips.

This dynamic quickly becomes energy-consuming for an already overworked staff, but also sometimes worrying for the patient's loved ones who are unable to get answers to their questions.

With Emilia, patients can record each of their medical procedures and automatically generate clear summaries. These can then be quickly shared with family members, reducing pressure on frontline staff and freeing up time for what matters most: patient care.

“Too often, families have to make multiple calls to understand what is going on, and this places a huge burden on staff. Emilia gives loved ones access to clear and accurate information without adding to the workload of the healthcare team.”, explains Dr. St-Germain.

Emilia, a Digital Memory for Patients and Health Professionals

Thanks to smart note-taking solutions for patients such as Emilia, your patients can leave a medical consultation with a simplified summary highlighting the key points of the meeting: diagnosis, treatment options, recommendations, and next steps.

This has two immediate effects:

  1. It reduces patient anxiety related to forgetting or misunderstanding.

  2. It empowers patients to take charge of their own health.

Emilia is also a valuable asset for caregivers. They can consult the summaries to better support the person they are caring for. As Dr. Pascal St-Germain points out:

“You can think of it as a safety net. Not only does the patient leave with the right information, but their loved ones can also clearly understand what has been said. It changes the dynamics of follow-up care.”

Do Patients Have the Right to Record Their Medical Consultations?

In Canada, patients have the right to record audio of their medical consultations. Currently, patients are allowed to record their consultations with their healthcare professionals and therefore use Emilia freely. We strongly suggest that patients inform their healthcare professionals of their intention to record in order to promote good collaboration.

The caveat is that with Emilia, the audio recording of the consultation is not accessible and cannot be shared anywhere. Only a simplified text summary of the topics discussed during the medical consultation is accessible.

Doctors, Welcome Emilia to Transform Your Relationship With Your Patients

In a context where Canada's healthcare network is modernizing and artificial intelligence is set to play a key role in improving care, solutions such as Emilia are becoming an essential partner in healthcare innovation.

In addition to its many benefits for patients and their loved ones, Emilia makes it easier for healthcare professionals to do their daily work and makes medical consultations more productive overall.

“As clinicians, we are often on the front lines when it comes to embracing innovation, and recording consultations is not a passing trend: it is a reality that is taking hold and is here to stay. Emilia offers a secure, useful, and reassuring framework for transforming this new patient reflex into a real clinical asset.”, concludes Dr. Pascal Saint-Germain.
